Discussion AssignmentsThis year students are expected to incorporate technology into their learning. Chemistry students are expected to participate in posting to the chemistry discussions.

Suggested starting places for science articles.


For this assignment I expect the article you pick to be from a reputable source and have an "academic" connection. Avoid personal blogs, encyclopedia entries (no wikipedia or Britannica) and opinion editorials. Here are some suggested starting points for your article searches however you can use other sources.

Discussion Assignment 1 ELEMENTAL CHEMISTRY


You are to research the web for an interesting article about an element or the periodic table. Create a new discussion post for your article; include a link to the original article. As part of your post you should include a short summary and a personal connection to the article. (125-250 words) If you cannot make connections, DON'T use the article.

Format for assignment
  1. Create a new discussion post for your article. Your title should relate to the article, but does not have to be the same as the article's title. Include a link to the original article.
  2. As part of your post you should include a short summary and your personal thoughts about the article. This should be one or two paragraphs, 125 to 250 words long. If you cannot make connections to the article, don't use it.
  3. Try to pose a question that can start a meaningful discussion at the end of your post
  4. Do a word count and include the number at the end of your post. Due by 11:59 pm on September 15th
  5. Some prompts to get you started :
    • How does this article apply to your life? Give examples.
    • How does this article apply to what you are studying in school? Give examples.
    • Does the article raise any issues? If so, what is your position on the issue? Why?
    • From everything in the article what is the most important?
    • What does this article make you wonder about?
  6. Read posts from at least three different students and respond. Each post should be one or two paragraphs, 125 to 200 words long. Due by 11:59 pm on October 5th.
